The mechanics are broadly the same in every state, and the differences that trip nurses up are almost always in the timing rather than the paperwork.

1. Confirm your expiration date with the board. Not the date on your wall certificate or in an employer system — the date in the board's own licence lookup. Birth-month states in particular are easy to misremember.
2. Finish continuing education first. Complete the hours, including any state-mandated topics, before you open the renewal form. Attesting to hours you have not finished is a separate violation from renewing late.
3. Renew inside the window. Most boards open renewal 60 to 90 days out. Submitting on the first available day costs the same as submitting on the last and removes portal-outage risk entirely.
4. Pay and keep the receipt. The confirmation number is your evidence of timely filing if the board's processing runs past your expiration date.
5. Verify the new expiration in the lookup. Paid does not always mean posted. Check the public licence record a few days later, and keep your CE certificates for the audit retention period your state specifies.

A multistate license issued under the Nurse Licensure Compact renews in exactly one place: your primary state of residence. That single renewal keeps your privilege to practise in every other compact state alive. You do not file anything with the states you travel to, and you do not hold a separate license in each of them.

The continuing education you complete is the CE your home state requires, not the sum of every state you worked in during the cycle. A nurse who lives in Georgia and takes assignments in Arizona and Missouri completes Georgia's requirement and attests to it on Georgia's renewal. Three details matter more than the rest. An expired license means you stop practising on the expiration date. Practising on a lapsed license is a distinct violation from letting it lapse, and it is the part boards discipline hardest — often with a separate fine per shift worked and a public record that follows the license through every future endorsement application.

What comes next depends on the state and on how long the licence has been expired. Some boards run a grace period during which the ordinary renewal form still works: Connecticut allows roughly 90 days, Maryland 30. Others move you immediately to a different filing — Illinois calls it restoration, Alabama and most boards call it reinstatement — which adds a fee, proof of continuing competence, and frequently fingerprints or a criminal background check you did not need at renewal.

Past a longer threshold, commonly three to five years, boards add a competency requirement on top of the paperwork: a refresher course with a clinical component, a documented number of recent practice hours, or in some cases re-examination.
