  2. Complete 24 contact hours including 1 Category A hour
    Category A must cover the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and Board rules, from an OBN approver or an OBN-approved provider unit. Since March 26, 2026 the provider no longer has to be headquartered in Ohio.
  3. Open the LPN renewal application in eLicense
    Sign in at elicense.ohio.gov and select the Licensed Practical Nurse renewal — not the RN application.
  4. Attest and answer disclosures
    Attest to CE completion and answer the conviction and discipline questions. Certificates are not uploaded.
  5. Pay $65 plus the $3.50 eLicense fee
    File by September 15. From September 16 through October 31 a $50 late processing fee applies.
  6. Save everything in Trust

Even years, not odd. This is the one thing that trips Ohio practical nurses up: ORC 4723.24 puts LPN renewals in even-numbered years and RN renewals in odd-numbered years. The RN guide is the wrong calendar for you, even though the fees and CE rules match.

You need 24 contact hours including 1 Category A hour on the Ohio Nurse Practice Act and Board rules (OAC 4723-14-03), from an OBN approver or an OBN-approved provider unit. As of March 26, 2026 that provider no longer has to be headquartered in Ohio.

2026 reporting-period note: the Board redefined the CE reporting period but delayed implementation. For this cycle, CE may still be completed through October 31, 2026. Plan for the new reporting period from the 2028 cycle, and confirm against the Board's own notice before you rely on a June 30 cutoff you read elsewhere.

First renewal after Ohio NCLEX-PN: 0 hours. Endorsement within a year: 12 hours. You attest at renewal and retain certificates for audit.

If you're late

The ladder is the same as the RN one: September 15 to file, September 16 – October 31 with a $50 late processing fee, and a lapse on November 1.

A lapsed Ohio LPN license means no practice until reinstatement is granted — a $100 application, plus processing time. After October 31 the pitch is reinstatement, which is worse in every way than a September reminder.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as the Ohio RN renewal page?
No. The substance of the CE requirement matches, but the calendar does not: LPNs renew in even-numbered years, RNs in odd-numbered years. Using the RN page's year is the most common Ohio mistake.
Did the CE reporting period change for 2026?
OAC 4723-14-01 redefined the CE reporting period, but the Board delayed implementation. CE for the 2026 LPN cycle may still be completed through October 31, 2026 — the new reporting period is expected to apply from the 2028 cycle. Do not stop at a June 30, 2026 cutoff based on older advice.
Do I need CE for my first renewal after NCLEX-PN?
No — 0 hours for the first renewal after initial Ohio licensure by examination. Licensure by endorsement one year or less before renewal requires 12 hours.
What does it cost if I miss the deadline?
$50 late processing fee between September 16 and October 31. After the license lapses on November 1, reinstatement costs $100 and you cannot work until it is processed.
Does the Nurse Licensure Compact cover LPNs?
Yes — the NLC covers LPN/VN licenses. You renew in your primary state of residence, so if Ohio is your PSOR, you renew here.
