How to renew your Arkansas RN license

Last updated: · Last verified: · Changelog · Trust editorial

Arkansas RN licenses renew every two years through the Arkansas State Board of Nursing and expire on the last day of your birth month. Per the board's Renewal FAQ, the year follows your birth year: born in an even-numbered year, you renew in even years; born in an odd year, odd years. The renewal link opens in the Arkansas Nurse Portal 60 days before expiration, and the RN renewal fee is $100. There is no grace period. Renewing after expiration adds a $100 late penalty and raises the CE requirement to 20 contact hours. In the 24 months before renewal, meet one continuing-education option: 15 practice-focused contact hours, a national certification or recertification, or an academic course in nursing. Trust stores your certificates on your phone and reminds you before your birth-month deadline.

Requirements

The rule is 17 CAR § 121-704(a), and the ASBN RN renewal page says the same. In the 24 months immediately before your renewal date, complete one of the following:

  1. 15 practice-focused contact hours from a nationally recognized or state continuing-education approval body recognized by ASBN; or
  2. Certification or recertification during the renewal period by a national certifying body recognized by ASBN; or
  3. An academic course in nursing or a related field. The ASBN CE page and CE FAQ say at least one college credit hour in nursing with a grade of C or better. One semester hour equals 15 contact hours.

You attest to this in the renewal application. You do not list courses or upload certificates unless ASBN selects you for an audit.

What counts as CE in Arkansas

Per the ASBN Continuing Education FAQ:

Counts:

  • AHA ACLS, PALS, NRP, and PEARS count as 10 contact hours each, initial or renewal, if taken in the two years before renewal. The card is your proof. See ACLS renewal and PALS renewal.
  • STABLE counts as 9.3 contact hours.
  • ENA courses such as TNCC and ENPC count.

Does not count:

  • CPR/BLS training does not count, even though your employer may still require it. See BLS renewal.
  • In-service programs, orientation, refresher courses, and courses designed for lay people don't count either (17 CAR § 121-708).
  • Practice focus: hours must relate to your area of practice, per the ASBN CE FAQ.
  • CME: counts only if nurses are in the target audience and the content fits your practice.
  • Carryover: hours beyond the requirement do not carry over to the next cycle (17 CAR § 121-704(f)).

First renewal after initial licensure

If your first renewal cycle is shorter than 24 months, ASBN requires no CE for that first renewal, as long as you renew on time. This comes from the ASBN CE FAQ and Renewal FAQ, and it applies whether you were licensed by examination or by endorsement.

Audits and record-keeping

  • Audits: ASBN runs random audits. If selected, you have 30 days from the audit letter to send copies of your certificates (17 CAR § 121-703).
  • Records: keep originals for two consecutive renewal periods or four years (17 CAR § 121-705(c)).
  • If an audit finds you short: you get 90 days to make up the hours. After that, ASBN assesses $50 per contact hour still missing and issues a letter of reprimand (17 CAR § 121-710(b); § 120-506).

One-time mandatory topics

None for standard RN renewal in 17 CAR § 121-704 as of September 28, 2026. APRNs with prescriptive authority have a separate five-hour pharmacotherapeutics requirement. That is outside this RN guide.

Compact and primary state of residence

  • Party state: Arkansas implemented the original Nurse Licensure Compact on July 1, 2000 and the current NLC on January 19, 2018. The source is the ASBN Compact page, and NCSBN's NLC implementation list gives the same January 19, 2018 date.
  • Multistate license: you need Arkansas as your primary state of residence plus the 11 uniform licensure requirements.
  • Licensed in Arkansas doesn't mean multistate. You may hold a single-state license. Check your license type on Nursys.
  • You declare your primary state of residence in the renewal application. Proof can include a driver's license, federal tax return, voter registration card, military form 2058, or a W-2 from a federal agency.
  • Another compact state as home: per the ASBN RN renewal page, "If another compact state is your primary state of residence and you have an active multistate license in that state; your Arkansas license will not be renewed."

What changed this cycle

This is the initial publish, September 28, 2026. ASBN's rules are now codified as 17 CAR Parts 120 and 121. Older ASBN PDFs still cite "Chapter 2, Section VII," which maps to 17 CAR §§ 121-701 through 121-710. Nothing substantive changed for RN renewal in the sources reviewed that day.

How to renew, step by step

  1. 01
    Confirm your expiration date
Arkansas RN licenses expire on the last day of your birth month. Per the ASBN Renewal FAQ, the year matches your birth year, even or odd. Check the exact date in your Arkansas Nurse Portal account or on Nursys.
  2. 02
    Finish one CE option
in the 24 months before renewal: 15 practice-focused contact hours, a national certification or recertification, or an academic nursing course. Keep the certificates.
  3. 03
Sign in to the Arkansas Nurse Portal
at arsbn.boardsofnursing.org/arsbn on a desktop computer. The board says no mobile devices. Create an account first if you have never signed in. The ASBN Renewal FAQ recommends a personal email address.
  4. 04
    Open the renewal link
It appears 60 days before expiration. Declare your primary state of residence, answer the conviction and discipline questions, and attest to your CE.
  5. 05
    Pay $100
by Visa, Mastercard, or Discover. Confirm the total before you submit, and save the emailed receipt.
  6. 06
    Confirm approval and store proof
ASBN's Renewal FAQ says to allow 2–3 business days; the renewal stays pending, and your expiration date does not change, until it is approved. Check the Nurse Portal or Nursys, then store the receipt and CE proof in Trust.

If you're late

  • No grace period. Per the ASBN Renewal FAQ, "There is no grace period," and extensions are not permitted. If you have not renewed by midnight on your expiration date, your license is expired.
  • Renewing on the last day is risky. ASBN warns that a renewal still pending review is not yet approved, so leave time for processing.
  • You cannot practice on a lapsed license. Anyone practicing on one is "an illegal practitioner" subject to Nurse Practice Act penalties (17 CAR § 121-802(d)).
  • Five years or less since your license was active: renew in the same Nurse Portal through the post-expiration application. You pay the $100 renewal fee plus the $100 late penalty. You also document one of these within the past two years (17 CAR § 121-704(c)(1); ASBN CE page):
    • 20 practice-focused contact hours,
    • a national certification or recertification, or
    • an academic course in nursing.
  • More than five years since your license was active: complete one of the options above. In addition, complete one of the following (17 CAR § 121-704(c)(2); ASBN post-expiration page):
    • 1,000 hours of nursing practice in the two years before applying, with a verification-of-employment form;
    • a board-approved refresher course within one year; or
    • graduation from an approved nursing program within one year.
  • Deployed service members and spouses: on written request, ASBN extends the expiration date to 180 days after return from deployment, with no late fee, and waives CE for that period (17 CAR § 121-903(b), (d)).

Frequently asked questions

When does my Arkansas RN license expire?
On the last day of your birth month, every two years. Per the Arkansas State Board of Nursing Renewal FAQ, you renew in even-numbered years if you were born in an even year and in odd years if you were born in an odd year. Confirm your exact date in the Arkansas Nurse Portal or on Nursys.
How much does it cost to renew an Arkansas RN license?
$100 on time. After expiration it is $200: the $100 renewal fee plus the $100 late renewal penalty (ASBN Fees; 17 CAR § 120-506). Confirm the portal total before you pay. The board does not list a processor fee.
How many CE hours does Arkansas require for RN renewal?
15 practice-focused contact hours is one of three options. The others are a national certification or recertification, or an academic course in nursing. You need one of the three within the 24 months before renewal (17 CAR § 121-704). If you renew late, the contact-hour option rises to 20.
Does ACLS or BLS count toward Arkansas nursing CE?
ACLS, PALS, NRP, and PEARS count as 10 contact hours each if taken in the two years before renewal. CPR/BLS does not count (ASBN Continuing Education FAQ).
Where do I renew my Arkansas RN license?
In the Arkansas Nurse Portal at arsbn.boardsofnursing.org/arsbn. The renewal link appears 60 days before expiration. The board says to use a desktop computer, not a mobile device.
Is there a grace period if my Arkansas license expires?
No. Per the Arkansas State Board of Nursing, a license not renewed by midnight on the expiration date is expired. Renewing afterward costs the $100 late penalty on top of the $100 fee and requires 20 contact hours instead of 15.
Is Arkansas in the Nurse Licensure Compact?
Yes. Arkansas implemented the current Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018 (ASBN; NCSBN). A multistate license requires Arkansas as your primary state of residence. If another compact state is your primary state of residence and you hold an active multistate license there, ASBN will not renew your Arkansas license.
Do I need a background check to renew in Arkansas?
Not routinely. Arkansas requires state and federal background checks for first-time applicants. At renewal, ASBN may require one if it deems it necessary (17 CAR § 121-805). The renewal application asks about convictions and discipline. If you report a new conviction, upload court records and a letter of explanation.
