How to renew your Mississippi RN license

Last updated: · Last verified: · Changelog · Trust editorial

Mississippi RN licenses renew every two years through the Mississippi Board of Nursing. Every RN license expires December 31 of even-numbered years. The 2026 renewal window runs July 1 through December 31, 2026, online in the board's Nurse Gateway, and the active RN renewal fee is $100. Mississippi has no routine continuing-education requirement for RN renewal. If you have not practiced in the past five years, you need one of three: 20 contact hours, a board-approved reorientation program, or 3 semester hours of nursing credit. Miss December 31 and late renewal costs $100 plus a $50 administrative fee in January. From February 1 to June 30 it costs $100 plus a $150 fee and a $75 criminal background check. Trust stores your license on your phone and reminds you before December 31.

2026 window (open now)

Per the Mississippi Board of Nursing's official 2026 renewal notice (Mississippi Nursing, Spring 2026, p. 20) and its Applications page:

  • Deadline: "Registered Nurse (RN) and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licenses expire on December 31, 2026."
  • Window: you can renew July 1 through December 31, 2026, online only in the Nurse Gateway. There are no paper applications.
  • Notices: the board sends notices by email only; it does not mail them. Failing to receive a notice "will not relieve you from the responsibility of renewing your license by the December 31, 2026, expiration date."
  • Timing: the board recommends renewing as early in the window as you can, to avoid technical problems at the last minute.

Requirements

Mississippi does not require CE for routine RN renewal. The MSBN FAQ says: "The Mississippi Nursing Practice Law does not mandate CEUs as a prerequisite to renewing or maintaining a RN or LPN license." The board repealed its continuing-education rule, 30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2815, in February 2020. Keeping competent in your own field of practice is still your responsibility.

Credentials your employer may still require: BLS renewal and ACLS renewal. Mississippi has no CE mandate to tie them to.

If you haven't practiced in five years

  • When this applies: you have not practiced nursing in the five years before you apply, whether paid or as a volunteer (Miss. Code § 73-15-27(a)(v)).
  • What you submit: evidence of continuing competency, filed with the application. The MSBN FAQ cites 30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2810, Ch. 4, Rule 4.7. Submit one of:
    1. A board-approved reorientation or refresher program completed within the past five years; or
    2. 20 contact hours of continuing education directly related to nursing practice, completed in the past two years; or
    3. At least 3 semester hours of nursing credit from an approved or accredited nursing program, completed in the past two years.
  • Acceptable providers: the 20 hours must come from a recognized credentialing agency. The board names the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as one. Online courses count if they meet that standard.

One-time mandatory topics

None for RN renewal as of September 28, 2026. APRNs have a separate requirement of five contact hours on controlled substances per certification period, tracked in CE Broker. That is outside this RN guide. The MSBN reinstatement page lists topics such as ethics and patient safety as recommended, not required.

Compact and primary state of residence

  • Membership: per the MSBN FAQ, Mississippi entered the Nurse Licensure Compact effective July 1, 2001. NCSBN's implementation list shows Mississippi in the current NLC since January 19, 2018.
  • Multistate or single-state: if Mississippi is your primary state of residence and you meet the 11 uniform licensure requirements, your license is multistate. Otherwise MSBN may issue a single-state license.
  • Online renewal eligibility: you can renew online if your primary state of residence is Mississippi or a state that is not in the compact. Per the MSBN FAQ, "A nurse whose primary state of residence is another Compact state is not eligible for licensure in Mississippi."
  • If you move to another compact state: apply for a license in your new home state. Per the MSBN FAQ, if that state issues you a multistate license, your Mississippi license becomes inactive and you keep the privilege to practice in Mississippi.
  • Changing to multistate: switching an active Mississippi license from single-state to multistate costs $25 (MSBN Fees).

What changed this cycle

  • Earlier start: RN renewal now opens on July 1 of the renewal year, starting with the 2026 cycle. The board's Applications page and 2026 renewal notice give July 1 for RNs. Some older MSBN pages still say September 1; this guide follows the 2026 notice.
  • Email-only notices: the board no longer mails renewal notices and sends them by email only.
  • Initial publish: September 28, 2026.

How to renew, step by step

  1. 01
    Check your Gateway email
The board sends renewal notices only by email. Sign in to the Nurse Gateway, then go to My Profile → Edit Profile and confirm your email address.
  2. 02
    Decide active or inactive
Renewing active costs $100. Renewing inactive costs $25, and you cannot practice on an inactive license. If you have not practiced in five years, have your competency documentation ready: 20 contact hours, a reorientation program, or 3 nursing semester hours.
  3. 03
Open the Nurse Gateway and click your RN license
to start the renewal. The window is July 1–December 31, 2026. The board recommends a desktop computer. It says smartphones and iPads may not be compatible, and the Gateway lists Edge, Firefox, or Chrome.
  4. 04
    Answer the application questions
and confirm your primary state of residence.
  5. 05
    Pay $100
by debit or credit card with a US billing address. Confirm the total before you submit.
  6. 06
Confirm the renewal and store proof
Check your license with Nursys Quick Confirm and enroll in Nursys e-Notify, as the board recommends. Then store your renewed license in Trust.

If you're late

  • After December 31: your license is expired if you have not renewed by December 31, 2026. Per the board's 2026 notice, "Working with an expired license is subject to discipline for working without a license." The MSBN FAQ says a nurse with a lapsed license "may not engage in the practice of nursing."
  • Late renewal tiers: the MSBN Applications page sets out two, both filed in the Nurse Gateway.
WhenWhat you payExtra step
January 1–30 (Late Renewal 1)$100 + $50 administrative feeNone listed
February 1–June 30 (Late Renewal 2)$100 + $150 administrative fee + $75Criminal background check. "License will not be renewed to active status until the criminal background check is completed."
  • After June 30: the late-renewal tiers end June 30. The MSBN reinstatement page covers expired licenses: an online reinstatement application, $100 plus a $75 criminal background check.
  • Fingerprints: only fingerprints taken by the Mississippi Board of Nursing are accepted, either at the board office or on a mailed card.
  • Expired more than two years before the current cycle: you cannot renew online and must apply for reinstatement (MSBN FAQ).

When does Mississippi RN renewal open?
July 1 of the renewal year. The 2026 window runs July 1 through December 31, 2026, per the Mississippi Board of Nursing Applications page and its official 2026 renewal notice.
How much does it cost to renew a Mississippi RN license?
$100 to renew active, or $25 to renew as inactive (MSBN Fees). Late renewal costs $150 in January and $325 from February 1 to June 30, including a $75 criminal background check. Confirm the Gateway total at payment. The board does not list a processor fee.
Do Mississippi RNs need continuing education to renew?
No, unless you have not practiced in the past five years. The Mississippi Board of Nursing repealed its CE rule in February 2020. If you have been out of practice five years, submit one of: 20 contact hours from the past two years, a board-approved reorientation program, or 3 semester hours of nursing credit.
Where do I renew my Mississippi nursing license?
Online in the Mississippi Board of Nursing Nurse Gateway at gateway.licensure.msbn.ms.gov. Click your license to start the renewal. There are no paper applications, and the board recommends a desktop computer.
What happens if I renew after December 31?
Your license is expired, and working on it is subject to discipline. From January 1 to 30 you can still renew for $100 plus a $50 administrative fee. From February 1 to June 30 it is $100 plus a $150 fee and a $75 criminal background check, and the license is not active until the check is complete (MSBN Applications page).
Is Mississippi in the Nurse Licensure Compact? Can I renew if I live in another compact state?
Yes. Mississippi is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. Per the MSBN FAQ, you can renew online if your primary state of residence is Mississippi or a non-compact state. A nurse whose primary state of residence is another compact state is not eligible for licensure in Mississippi. If you move and your new compact home state issues you a multistate license, your Mississippi license becomes inactive and you keep the privilege to practice in Mississippi.
Will the Mississippi Board of Nursing mail me a renewal notice?
No. The board says nurses will not receive mailed notices. It emails the address on file in your Nurse Gateway, and missing the email does not extend the December 31 deadline.
