Requirements
The old 45-CE-hour / 531-practice-hour 3-year model is retired. The Washington State Board of Nursing now runs a strict annual, birthday-based cycle for RN licensure — every nurse's renewal date is tied to their own birthday rather than a shared statewide deadline, which spreads the board's workload but also means there's no single "renewal season" reminder the way many other states have.
8 CE hours annually, including 2 hours of health equity every renewal period. Free DOH-listed courses qualify, so the health equity portion doesn't have to add cost, only planning.
96 active practice hours annually for an active license (retired-active status: 8 CE + 24 practice hours). Practice hours are self-attested at renewal, and the board can audit.

Continuing education, topic by topic
8 total CE hours every renewal period, with 2 of those 8 hours reserved for health equity training. Health equity courses on the Department of Health's model list are free and satisfy the requirement without additional cost. The remaining 6 hours can come from any board-recognized CE activity relevant to your practice.
Retired-active status has a lighter load: 8 CE hours total but only 24 practice hours, instead of the 96 required for a fully active license. This is a common path for nurses who are stepping back from regular practice but don't want to fully deactivate.
The one-time 6-hour suicide prevention training is separate from the annual 8-hour CE requirement — it is completed once, from the DOH model list, and does not need to be repeated at subsequent renewals.
What changed this cycle
The biggest structural change remains the move from a 3-year to an annual cycle, which replaced the old 45-CE-hour / 531-practice-hour requirement with the current 8 CE / 96 practice hours per year. Nurses who licensed under the old system sometimes still expect a multi-year runway; that runway no longer exists.
Washington joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in July 2023, adding the multistate license option for nurses whose primary residence is Washington. Oregon has not joined the compact, so a Washington MSL still does not authorize practice in Oregon.
Your first renewal after licensure
Because the Washington cycle is annual and birthday-based, your first renewal falls on the first birthday after initial licensure, even if that is only a few months after you were licensed. Check HELMS for your specific first renewal date rather than assuming a full year.
CE and practice-hour requirements at first renewal are generally prorated based on how much of the period has elapsed since initial licensure; consult the board's published guidance in HELMS for your specific licensure date, since exact proration figures are set by board policy and can change.
The demographic survey and the one-time suicide prevention training apply at first renewal the same as every subsequent one — do not assume either is waived for new licensees.
