California paramedic renewal: the 30-day fee window

· Last verified:

California EMSA paramedic renewal costs $250 when a complete application is received at least 30 calendar days before expiration. Inside that window, a $50 late fee applies for a $300 total. The fee schedule has been effective since July 1, 2021. File early and keep CE certificates ready for audit.

What changed / what to know

California paramedic licenses renew every two years through the Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMSA). Title 22 sets two fee outcomes that clinicians often treat as one number:

On time: Renewal application fee $250 when a complete application is received at least thirty (30) calendar days before the current license expires (22 CCR § 100097.02(b)(3)(B); filing window in § 100093.07(b)).

Late filing window: If the complete application is not received in that 30-day window, a $50 late fee applies (§ 100097.02(b)(4)) → $300 total.

Those amounts have been in effect July 1, 2021 and thereafter. Earlier interim figures ($225 on-time in FY 2020–21) are superseded.

Who it affects

California-licensed paramedics (EMT-P) renewing with EMSA. Local EMT/AEMT certifications through LEMSAs are a different process and fee schedule.

What to do

  1. Confirm your license expiration date in the EMSA portal.
  2. Treat expiration minus 30 calendar days as the on-time fee cutoff for a complete application — incomplete filings can still trigger the late fee.
  3. Finish CE before you rely on the portal (California renewal CE is covered on the Trust guide: 48 hours with instructor-based minimums).
  4. Pay $250 on time or budget $300 if you are inside the late window.
  5. Do not confuse EMSA state paramedic renewal with NREMT. NREMT is not required for routine California renewal.
