How to renew your New York RN registration

Requirements
New York has no general CE-hour requirement for RNs — a common point of confusion for nurses moving from states like California or Florida. Instead, NYSED requires two specific pieces of coursework.
Infection control: NYSED-approved infection control and barrier precautions coursework every 4 years. Note this is a different clock than your 3-year registration cycle. Exemptions are available if your practice does not warrant it.
Child abuse reporting: a one-time NYSED-approved course in identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment. All mandated reporters must complete the updated curriculum by November 17, 2026, even if they took the older version.
Keep your completion certificates — providers report to NYSED, but you attest at renewal. Your registration period aligns to your birth month; the second registration after initial licensure is shortened (and prorated) to move you onto the birth-month cycle.

If you're late
Practicing with an expired registration is illegal in New York — it is the registration, not the lifetime license, that authorizes practice. Within 4 months of expiration, renew online as normal.
Beyond 4 months, NYSED's Delayed Registration process applies, and you may need to account for the lapse period. Employers verify registration status through NYSED's public verification search — an expired registration is visible to them immediately.
