  2. Complete 60 NCCP credits
    30 national (fixed topics), 15 local/state (California mandates nothing here — flexible), 15 individual (flexible).
  3. Enter education as you earn it
    Log each course in the NREMT portal rather than backfilling — the audit process is easier with contemporaneous entries.
  4. Submit and pay $32
    Recertification by education is $32. Recertification by exam is $175 per attempt.
  5. Respond promptly to any audit request
    Audits are random. Provide certificates within the requested window and keep records for 36 months.
  6. Save the new card to Trust
    Download the updated NREMT card and store it in Trust.

Requirements

National component (30 credits): fixed topic list per the 2025 NCCP model (effective April 1, 2025).

Local/state component (15 credits): California mandates nothing specific here — any EMS patient-care CE works.

Individual component (15 credits): flexible.

Counts: CAPCE-accredited, state-accepted, EMS program, or accredited academic courses — all patient-care related. Does not count: clinical rotations, instructor courses, precepting, management courses, duty time, or duplicate course titles.

No distributive-education limit since 2022. Random audits — keep certificates at least 36 months.

California overlap: EMSA's 48-hour CE and NREMT's 60 credits overlap heavily via CAPCE courses. Run both clocks on the same set of courses.

If you're late

April 1–30: submit with a $50 late fee, but only education completed by March 31 counts.

After April 30 — lapsed: if you hold a current state EMS license, use the State Licensed Pathway. Without one, the Re-entry Pathway requires 60 credits within 2 years, passing the certification exam, and program/skills verification.

Education more than 2 years old, with no current certification or state license, means restarting a full initial program.

Frequently asked questions

Can all 60 credits be online?
Yes. The distributive-education limit was removed in 2022 — all 60 NCCP credits can be completed online if the courses are CAPCE-accredited or state-accepted.
What if I submit in April?
You can submit through April 30 with a $50 late fee, but all education must have been completed by March 31. After April 30 the certification is lapsed.
Does my EMSA CE count toward NREMT?
Generally yes when the courses are CAPCE-accredited or state-accepted and cover patient-care topics. The EMSA 48-hour and NREMT 60-credit requirements overlap heavily.
Do I need NREMT to work in California?
No. But if your EMSA license lapses 12 months or more, current NREMT registration is your way back without retesting.
